| | Profile | | A former high school social studies teacher, Dr. White's primary teaching area is social studies methods in the elementary education program, a continuation of his work at George Mason University in Virginia (1985-1994). His publications span instructional technology and social studies education, ranging from a general text in educational computing to a K-12 curriculum framework for the award-winning Teaching With Historic Places project. The framework was developed for the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Park Service and has been the focus of teacher workshops that Dr. White has offered nationwide. Dr. White served for many years as technology editor for Social Education, the official journal of the National Council for the Social Studies. He now serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies. Dr. White is past president of the Social Science Education Consortium, an organization of senior scholars dedicated to strengthening linkages between university historians/social scientists and educators. While continuing his work to make history more accessible to school children, Dr. White also directs "Projects in Civic Engagement," programs designed to promote civic education in the United States and overseas (www.bu.edu/sed/civicengagement). He is coordinator of the Civitas@Eurasia partnership at Boston University, a collaborative with Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, and Mongolia -- an effort to revamp civics curriculum and teacher education to support the development of civil society and democratic institutions. |
