| | Profile | | Beginning in 1989, Boston University entered a partnership with the City of Chelsea, Massachusetts, to oversee administration of city's public schools. Since that time, the University, in cooperation with the city, has reformed the school system, revitalized the curriculum and introduced the Core Knowledge Program, established comprehensive professional development for school personnel, improved markedly the levels of student achievement, decreased significantly the student drop-out rates, increased markedly the average daily student attendance, increased the numbers of high school graduates, increased the numbers of high school graduates advancing to post-secondary education, improved job placements to high school graduates, developed a community schools program for after-school activities and adult education, identified and coordinated outreach to community based organizations for supplementing school services with community resources, established programs to link the home and the schools, decreased teacher absenteeism and encouraged teacher professionalism, improved the financial management of the school system, improved salaries and benefits for all staff, implemented effective recruitment and retention policies, established assessment designs for increased formative monitoring of student performance, and modernized school facilities by building new schools for all grade levels. The Partnership implemented one of the Commonwealth's most extensive pre-school programs: children from age 3 attend the Chelsea Public Schools at no cost. |
