Profile
Professor Schickedanz specializes in preschool education and child development. She is a national and international leader in the area of early literacy development. Dr. Schickedanz served as President of the Literacy Development in Young Children Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association, in 2003, and has served on the Commission on Reading First/Early Literacy of the International Reading Association since June 2002. Dr. Schickedanz was a member of the Teacher Standards Committee for the Accreditation Revision Commission for The National Association for the Education of Young Children in 2003-2004. Her publications in early literacy include the books, “Much More than The ABCs,” “Writing in Preschool: Orchestrating Meaning and Marks;” the ground breaking comprehensive language and literacy, preschool curriculum, “Opening the World of Learning;” and numerous book chapters and articles. Dr. Schickedanz’s advice is widely sought by state departments of education, private foundations, professional associations, and school systems. Dr. Schickedanz consults widely with Early Reading First projects across the country, and conducts site-based, external reviews of Early Reading First Projects for the U.S. Department of Education. Her other consultancies have included: Education Development Center, Committee for Children, Public Broadcasting Service, U.S. Department of Education, Ohio Office of Early Childhood Education, the Alabama Office of School Readiness, University of Southern Maine Cutler Institute, Rise Learning Solutions, and the Children’s Television Workshop.
